The Ministry of Music at St Andrews in the City and St Marks at Awapuni
As the church building at St Andrew’s is closed to the public at this time, due to the earthquake policy, choir practice is held at Roy’s home.
Lively choral traditions exist at both worship centres. St Andrew’s Choir has a fine tradition going back over 80 years, with Robert Matthews at the helm from 1955 to 2002. St Andrew’s Choir sang mainly traditional choral music often accompanied by organ. The pipe organ at St Andrews contains beautifully crafted 139 year old pipework which has been tonally reset and fine-tuned by John Hargraves of the South Island Organ Company after reinstallation. A grand piano was donated by the van Kraayenoord family in 2013.
The choir at St Marks flourished under such leaders as Mrs Jean Gillies in the 70’s and Wendy Hunt in the 90’s. A digital piano donated by the late Helen Brechin provides the accompaniment. The choir sang a variety of music from modern settings to world music in an intimate setting.
The parish choir sings in a variety of styles and membership is open to anyone. Choir rehearsals are held every Thursday in the Chapel at St Andrews in the City from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. All Saints Anglican Church Choir also rehearse on the same evening using the community Room in preparation for their Sunday 5pm service.
